I have an NDIS plan. What next?+

Talk to us about the support you’re looking for. We’ll discuss your goals, service options and availability before you choose your next step.

Can I enquire about changing providers?+

Yes. Talk to our team about your needs and the support you’re looking for. We’ll discuss suitability, availability and arrangements to review with your current provider.

Can someone enquire on my behalf?+

A family member, representative or support coordinator can contact us with your consent.

What should I ask about costs?+

Ask for the proposed rates, travel costs, cancellation arrangements and any other charges before you agree. Your plan and the type of support affect what can be paid from NDIS funding. Check current NDIS pricing information (opens in a new tab)

What is a service agreement?+

It records the support you and a provider agree on, including how it will be delivered and paid for. Ask questions and take time to understand the arrangements. Read the NDIS service-agreement guide (opens in a new tab)

/01How do I change NDIS providers?

Check your service agreement for how much notice you need to give. Find and agree terms with your new provider first, so there is no gap in support. Then tell your current provider, plus your support coordinator or plan manager if you have one. Ask whether you or the provider will end the 'my provider' record in the NDIS portal, or call the NDIA on 1800 800 110.

/02How do I choose an NDIS provider?

Start with what you need help with and what matters to you, such as worker gender, language or times. Meet a provider before you agree to anything and ask about prices, cancellations and how to complain. You can search registered providers with the NDIS provider finder, or ask your support coordinator or my NDIS contact for help.

/03What does it mean if an NDIS provider is registered?

A registered provider has been approved by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission and must meet its quality and safety conditions. Registered providers cannot charge more than the NDIS price limits. Unregistered providers also exist. They are not registered with or regulated by the NDIS Commission in the same way, but they must still follow the NDIS Code of Conduct. You can look up any registered provider on the NDIS Provider Register.

/04Can I use a provider if my plan is NDIA-managed, plan-managed or self-managed?

If your funding is NDIA-managed, you must use registered providers. If it is plan-managed or self-managed, you can usually choose registered or unregistered providers. Some supports always need a registered provider, including supported independent living (SIL), specialist disability accommodation (SDA), specialist behaviour support and plan management. Heart for Care is a registered NDIS provider, so you can use us with any of the three options, as long as the support is in your plan.

/05Do I need a written service agreement?

It depends on the support. A written agreement is required for specialist disability accommodation and encouraged for SIL. For other supports the NDIA recommends one. Heart for Care agrees a written service agreement with you before support starts. A provider can never use one to sign away its duties under the NDIS Code of Conduct or Australian Consumer Law.

/06What can I do if I'm not happy with my provider?

If you feel comfortable, tell the provider first. Providers must deal with complaints quickly and must not threaten you for raising one. You can give Heart for Care feedback or make a complaint by phone, email or our feedback form. You can also contact the NDIS Commission on 1800 035 544 (TTY 133 677). If someone is in danger, call 000.

/07Do I need my NDIS plan before I contact a provider?

No. You can contact a provider to ask questions at any time. But NDIS funding can only pay for supports once you have an approved plan with funding for that support. If you are not in the NDIS yet, contact the NDIA on 1800 800 110 to ask about applying.

/08Can I change providers in the middle of my plan?

Yes. You can change providers at any time. Your plan stays the same. Your new provider is paid from the same funding, so check how much is left in your plan before you agree on new supports.
