Behaviour support
implementation.
Our support workers follow the behaviour support plan written by your NDIS behaviour support practitioner. We put the plan into practice in daily life. We don't write it.
Behaviour support implementationWhat this support
can include.
01Using the strategies every day
Workers use the everyday strategies in your plan, such as keeping to routines, making changes to your surroundings and helping you communicate what you need. The aim is a better quality of life, not only responding to behaviour.
02Practising skills
Many plans include skills to learn or practise, such as new ways to communicate or handle everyday situations. Workers help you practise these skills during your usual supports.
What to know before you start.
Who writes the plan and who puts it into practice
Your behaviour support plan is written by an NDIS behaviour support practitioner. The NDIS Commission assesses practitioners as suitable and keeps a register of them. The practitioner starts with a functional behaviour assessment, which looks at the reasons behind a behaviour.
The practitioner is responsible for setting up, monitoring and reviewing your plan. They talk with you, your family, carers and workers about how the strategies are working.
Heart for Care's role is to put the plan into practice through the support workers who work with you. We do not write behaviour support plans, carry out behaviour assessments or decide what goes in a plan.
How behaviour support can be funded in your NDIS plan
The practitioner's work, such as the assessment, the plan and training for workers, is funded from Capacity Building. Older plans call this category Improved Relationships. Newer plans may show a Behaviour Support category.
The daily support our workers give while following your plan usually comes from your Core budget, such as Assistance with Daily Life or Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation.
Some people need intensive daily support to follow their plan. The NDIS calls this Intensive and Complex Behaviour Support. It has its own price limits and rules about provider registration. Whether any support is funded depends on your plan and what the NDIA agrees is reasonable and necessary.
Safeguards and your rights
Behaviour support in the NDIS must respect your dignity and follow NDIS rules. The NDIS Commission oversees behaviour support across the NDIS.
If your plan includes regulated restrictive practices, they must be authorised under your state or territory's process and reported to the NDIS Commission every month.
You can give us feedback or make a complaint at any time. You can also contact the NDIS Commission on 1800 035 544 or through its website.

/01What is a behaviour support plan?
A behaviour support plan is written by an NDIS behaviour support practitioner after a behaviour assessment. It sets out strategies to understand your needs and support you in ways that respect your dignity and improve your quality of life. It guides everyone who supports you.
/02Does Heart for Care write behaviour support plans?
No. We put into practice plans written by NDIS behaviour support practitioners. If you need a plan, you can find a practitioner through the NDIS Commission's register or the NDIA's Provider Finder.
/03What is positive behaviour support?
Positive behaviour support is about finding ways to help you, and the people who support you, change behaviours that may be a problem for you or others. It uses strategies that meet your needs and respect your dignity. It can include changes to your environment and learning new skills.
/04What if I don't have a behaviour support plan yet?
Talk to your my NDIS contact, support coordinator or local area coordinator. The NDIA may fund a behaviour support assessment and plan if they meet the NDIS funding criteria. We can talk with you about how we could support you once a plan is in place.
/05Can my family learn to use my behaviour support plan?
Yes. The NDIA may fund your practitioner to train a family member, friend or carer to use the strategies in your plan. This helps everyone support you in the same way.
/06How often is a behaviour support plan reviewed?
Your practitioner is responsible for monitoring and reviewing your plan regularly. A new plan may be needed if you move house, start with new providers or your needs change. If you get a new plan, you must give the NDIA a copy.
